The 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Boys’ Football Championship reached a dramatic climax at the semi-final stage on Monday in Lira City, Northern Uganda, as Amus College School edged giants St Mary’s Kitende in a tense penalty shootout to book a place in the final against Bukedea Comprehensive School South.

The emotionally charged encounter at Dr Obote College playground had everything football lovers could ask for — excitement, tension, heartbreak, wild celebrations, tears, pain and agony — as tournament favourites St Mary’s Kitende were eliminated from the championship in painful fashion.

After a fiercely contested 90 minutes that ended goalless, the two sides headed for penalties to determine who would advance to the final of Uganda’s most prestigious secondary school football competition.

Amus College School held their nerve during the shootout despite finishing the game with ten men following the sending off of Pius Oyirwoth after receiving a second yellow card.

In the decisive penalty contest, Mathias Kasadha, Ivan Okello, Roy Olara and team captain Iddi Abdul Rashid calmly converted for Amus College School to keep their dream alive.

For St Mary’s Kitende, Moses Kalule scored their only successful penalty, but Marvin Kabiito’s effort struck the lower post before bouncing out, leaving the Wakiso-based football giants in deep frustration.

Amus College goalkeeper Usama Chagama emerged as one of the heroes of the evening after producing a crucial save, diving brilliantly to his left to deny Collins Ochatre and spark jubilant celebrations among the Amus supporters and technical bench.

The victory marked one of the biggest statements of the tournament for Amus College School, who showed resilience, tactical discipline and composure under immense pressure against one of Uganda’s traditional school football powerhouses.

Meanwhile, the second semi-final played at Lira Town College saw Bukedea Comprehensive School South secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Kyadondo Secondary School.

Patrick Ssenkusu proved to be the difference maker after scoring in the 55th minute to send Bukedea Comprehensive into the final.

Bukedea Comprehensive School South have enjoyed an impressive campaign throughout the championship and will now face a confident Amus College side in what promises to be an electrifying final on Tuesday, 19th May 2026.

The final is expected to attract huge attention from football fans, scouts, school administrators and sports stakeholders from across the country as two emerging school football forces battle for national glory.

For Amus College School, the final presents an opportunity to crown their remarkable journey with silverware after overcoming one of the tournament’s biggest favourites, while Bukedea Comprehensive will be aiming to continue their dominant run and lift the coveted USSSA Boys’ football title.
