President Museveni Urges Ideological Discipline and Wealth Creation at Kyankwanzi Retreat

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on newly elected Members of Parliament under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and party-leaning Independents to embrace ideology, discipline, and a production-oriented mindset as key pillars for transforming Uganda’s socio-economic landscape.
The President made the remarks while officially opening the Leaders’ Retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, a facility widely known for grooming political and administrative leaders within the NRM framework.
Congratulatory Message and Call for Reflection
In his opening address, President Museveni congratulated the legislators on their electoral victories and hailed the NRM’s strong performance in the recently concluded elections. However, he cautioned against complacency, urging the leaders to critically assess areas of weakness that could undermine future success.
He emphasized that while the party has maintained dominance, sustained progress will depend on the ability of its leaders to identify gaps and implement corrective measures.
Ideology and Leadership Responsibility
The President underscored the importance of ideological clarity, noting that leadership goes beyond holding office to understanding the philosophical foundations that guide decision-making. He urged the MPs to deepen their grasp of political ideology, philosophy, and strategic thinking in order to effectively diagnose societal challenges and prescribe lasting solutions.
According to Museveni, ideological grounding has been central to the NRM’s longevity and must continue to shape the conduct of its leaders.
Ending Poverty Through Production
A key highlight of his address was a renewed call for wealth creation through production. The President stressed that Uganda’s fight against poverty can only be won if citizens actively engage in producing goods and services.
He warned against dependency on handouts and condemned corruption as a barrier to national development. Instead, he encouraged a shift toward a productive economy where every able adult contributes meaningfully to wealth generation.
“This generation must end poverty by creating prosperity through production,” he noted, adding that sustainable development cannot be achieved through charity or rent-seeking practices.
Role of MPs in Socio-Economic Transformation
President Museveni tasked the legislators with the responsibility of guiding their constituents toward income-generating activities and supporting government programs aimed at boosting household incomes. He urged them to act as agents of transformation, ensuring that government policies translate into tangible improvements in people’s livelihoods.
The retreat, he noted, provides an opportunity for leaders to align on national priorities and strengthen their capacity to deliver on the NRM’s agenda.
Week-Long Engagements Ahead
The Kyankwanzi retreat is expected to feature a series of lectures, discussions, and strategic sessions aimed at equipping MPs with knowledge and tools to effectively execute their mandate. President Museveni expressed optimism that the engagements would foster unity, sharpen focus, and reinforce commitment to national development goals.
As the sessions unfold, attention will be on how the newly elected leaders internalize the President’s message and translate it into actionable outcomes for the country.
The retreat at Kyankwanzi continues to serve as a critical platform for shaping the ideological direction and governance approach of Uganda’s ruling party, with a strong emphasis on discipline, patriotism, and economic transformation.
