Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga Leads Kampala University Community in Mourning the Passing of Distinguished Scholar Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmad Suhail
In an official statement released on behalf of the entire Kampala University community, Prof. Kateregga announced that Prof. Suhail passed away on 27th October 2025, leaving behind an enduring legacy of academic excellence, mentorship, and dedicated service to higher education in Uganda and the East African region.
Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru Ddungu Kateregga, the Founding Vice Chancellor of Kampala University, has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmad Suhail, a renowned Pakistani academic and long-serving scholar at Kampala University.
In an official statement released on behalf of the entire Kampala University community, Prof. Kateregga announced that Prof. Suhail passed away on 27th October 2025, leaving behind an enduring legacy of academic excellence, mentorship, and dedicated service to higher education in Uganda and the East African region.
Prof. Suhail joined Kampala University in 2004, where he served diligently as Dean and Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology until his death. His intellectual contributions and leadership in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have been instrumental in shaping the academic direction of the institution and advancing ICT education across the region.
Before joining Kampala University, Prof. Suhail taught at Kitante Hill School and later lectured in the Department of Mathematics at Makerere University. His academic journey also took him to The East African University, Kitengela (Nairobi), where he served as a Professor in the School of Computer Science and IT. In 2016, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of East African University Rwanda (EAUR), further extending his influence across East Africa’s higher education landscape.
A certified scholar in Arabic Language Studies, Prof. Suhail earned both his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees from the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan. He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Information Technology from Makerere University.
As an academic and researcher, Prof. Suhail made significant contributions in the fields of blended learning, e-learning, and multimedia. His scholarly works, numerous publications, and role as a journal editor and reviewer have greatly enriched ICT education and research. He was also an active member of the ICTD4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development) research group, which focuses on leveraging technology for sustainable development.
Reflecting on his passing, Owek. Amb. Prof. Kateregga described Prof. Suhail as “a man of humility, scholarship, and vision whose intellectual generosity and devotion to teaching will forever remain a beacon in our academic community.” He added that the deceased was not only a mentor to many students and colleagues but also a bridge between Ugandan and Pakistani academia, fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange.
Beyond the university, Prof. Suhail’s expertise benefited the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda and several academic institutions in Pakistan. His lifelong commitment to knowledge and innovation earned him respect among peers, students, and educational leaders alike.
The Kampala University community, the Pakistan High Commission in Uganda, the Pakistan Community in Uganda, and the BDK Universities’ Network International are all united in mourning his passing.
A funeral ceremony in honour of Prof. Suhail will be held on Friday, 31st October 2025, at the Kampala University Main Campus in Ggaba, starting at 11:00 a.m. This will be followed by Juma prayers and Salat al-Janazah, before the burial at the Kololo Muslim Cemetery Grounds at 3:00 p.m.
In his message of condolence, Prof. Kateregga prayed for Allah’s mercy upon Prof. Suhail’s soul, saying:
“May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, accept his noble deeds, and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Innalillahi wa innalilahi rajioon – Verily, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.”
Through his decades of service, Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmad Suhail leaves behind a monumental legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and faith — one that will continue to inspire generations of students and educators at Kampala University and beyond.
