President Museveni Urges Economic Transformation at Nansana Rally: Focus on Jobs, Wealth and Commercial Agriculture
Despite challenging weather conditions, scores of supporters stood in the rain to listen to the President’s message, highlighting the strong local engagement with national development discourse.
WAKISO, Uganda — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by his wife, Maama Janet Kataha Museveni, addressed a passionate crowd in Nansana, Wakiso District, today, underscoring the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) development agenda centered on income generation, wealth creation, and job opportunities for Ugandans.
Despite challenging weather conditions, scores of supporters stood in the rain to listen to the President’s message, highlighting the strong local engagement with national development discourse.
Reflecting on Uganda’s Development Journey
President Museveni began by reflecting on his long history with the region, recalling that when he first came through the area—“in the bush”—the Kampala–Gulu highway was already tarmacked, yet many of the people living along the road resided in grass-thatched and mud-walled homes. At that time, even houses with iron sheets often had mud walls, illustrating the stark contrast between infrastructural progress and household-level wealth.
He used this recollection to emphasize a central theme of his address: development of infrastructure alone is not enough if it does not translate into tangible wealth and improved livelihoods for ordinary Ugandans.
“Development existed, but household wealth did not,” the President said, laying the foundation for his message on economic transformation.
NRM’s Economic Priorities: Jobs, Wealth, and Productivity
President Museveni reaffirmed that the NRM government’s priorities remain rooted in creating wealth, jobs, and sustainable incomes for Ugandans. He stressed that the next phase of Uganda’s development must focus on transforming the economy from subsistence to commercial production.
His remarks spotlighted several key pillars:
Commercial Agriculture: Described as the government’s first priority, President Museveni highlighted the importance of productive farming. He explained that correctly done commercial agriculture is crucial for both smallholder and large-scale farmers.
Small landholders should emphasize intensive agricultural practices to maximize output per acre.
Larger land holdings can harness extensive farming methods suited to broader commercial ventures.
Enterprise Choice and Wealth Creation: The President underscored that the choice of agricultural enterprises matters greatly, implying that farmers should align their production with market demands and value chains that yield incomes and sustainable profits.
Industrial and Artisan Growth: Beyond agriculture, President Museveni also highlighted artisans, workshops, and industries in Wakiso as vital contributors to job creation and local economic activity, praising their role in generating wealth for families and communities.
Despite the downpour, a sizable crowd gathered in Nansana to hear the President’s address. President Museveni expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the dedication of residents who braved the rain to engage with the rally’s message.
He emphasized that such public participation reflects local interest in national development dialogue and the shared aspiration for improved economic well-being.
In closing, President Museveni reiterated that the NRM’s development strategy remains focused on transforming Uganda’s economy through commercial farming, skills development, industrial growth, and job creation. His address in Nansana reinforced the party’s narrative that infrastructure development must be matched with strategic economic empowerment at the household level.
As Uganda approaches forthcoming elections, the themes of wealth creation, agricultural commercialization, and job opportunities are expected to remain central to campaign discussions and national policy debates.
