Government Commissions Homes for Liberation Veterans in Nakaseke District

Nakaseke– The Government of Uganda has taken another step in honoring the heroes of the country's liberation struggle with the commissioning of two newly constructed and fully furnished houses for veterans in Nakaseke District. The ceremony, officiated by the Minister of State for Luwero and Rwenzori Triangle, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, marked a significant milestone in recognizing the selfless contributions of freedom fighters who participated in the armed struggle that led to Uganda’s liberation from dictatorial regimes between 1981 and 1986.

The beneficiaries of this noble gesture were Mr. Nyindo Muluka, a veteran from Katale Kamese Parish in Butalangu Subcounty, and the family of the late Dodovico Kintu, popularly known by his alias Galimpitawa, from Migiingye Parish, Semuto Subcounty. Both individuals were active participants in the historic five-year war led by Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, now President of Uganda.

The two homes were expertly built by NEC Construction Works and Engineering Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC). The construction project reflects NEC’s commitment to national development and its capacity to deliver high-quality infrastructure.

While commissioning the houses, Hon. Alice Kaboyo expressed profound appreciation for the gallant efforts of the veterans, acknowledging the critical role they played in shaping Uganda’s history. She noted that although this recognition may have come late, the government remains committed to honoring and supporting those who risked their lives for the country's freedom.

“We are here today to say thank you. These homes are a token of appreciation, a symbol that your sacrifices have not been forgotten. The government may not reach everyone at once, but I urge those still waiting to remain patient—your time will come,” said Hon. Kaboyo.

She commended NEC for the exceptional quality of work delivered within the agreed timelines, highlighting the agency's growing importance in public infrastructure development.

Hon. Kaboyo encouraged veterans and residents of Nakaseke to take advantage of government poverty alleviation programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) to uplift their households economically. She emphasized that the true legacy of the liberation struggle is not only in freedom but also in prosperity.

In a powerful appeal to civic responsibility, the Minister also urged the people of Nakaseke to elect leaders who prioritize service delivery over mere rhetoric.

NEC’s Pledge to Continue Building for Ugandans

Representing Lt. Gen. James Mugira, Managing Director of NEC, Eng. Brian Buhanda, General Manager of NEC Works, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his unwavering commitment to recognizing the nation's freedom fighters.

“We thank the President for his visionary leadership and for entrusting NEC with projects that make a tangible impact in the lives of Ugandans. We are honored to serve the very people who made this country what it is today,” Eng. Buhanda said.

He praised the Ministry of Luwero and Rwenzori Triangle for its confidence in NEC’s ability and reaffirmed the corporation’s dedication to contributing to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation through professional construction services.

Eng. Buhanda also expressed his appreciation to Minister Kaboyo for personally commissioning the structures, despite her demanding schedule.

The event drew several high-profile attendees including:

Hon. Kabuye Kyofa, State Minister for Kampala

Hon. Najjemba, Woman Member of Parliament for Nakaseke District

Ms. Rosemary Byabasaija, Resident District Commissioner for Nakaseke District

Their presence underscored the importance the government places on recognizing its veterans and reaffirmed the collective commitment to uplifting the communities that played a central role in Uganda’s liberation history.

Nakaseke, often referred to as the heartland of the liberation war, continues to hold a sacred place in Uganda’s history. The commissioning of these homes is not just about providing shelter; it is a national reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women who believed in a better Uganda.

The ceremony on July 9, 2025, served as both a gesture of gratitude and a call to action—encouraging unity, resilience, and active participation in national development, especially for those who once fought to see the Uganda we know today.
