Nominations Close with 16 Candidates in Butaleja District Ahead of 2026 General Elections
According to the Returning Officer, Mr. John Paul Osinde, the two-day nomination exercise attracted five candidates for the District Woman MP seat and eleven candidates for the Bunyole West and Bunyole East constituency seats respectively.

The Electoral Commission in Butaleja District has officially concluded the nomination exercise for the 2026 General Elections, confirming a total of 16 candidates for the Woman Member of Parliament and constituency MP seats.
According to the Returning Officer, Mr. John Paul Osinde, the two-day nomination exercise attracted five candidates for the District Woman MP seat and eleven candidates for the Bunyole West and Bunyole East constituency seats respectively.

While addressing the press at the conclusion of the nomination exercise, Mr. Osinde commended the candidates for observing peace and order throughout the process. He urged them to maintain the same discipline during campaigns, emphasizing the need for issue-based politics.
“We encourage all candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns. The Electoral Commission will soon release a harmonized campaign program to guide all contestants. Generosity during the campaign period is welcome, provided it is not perceived as voter bribery,” Mr. Osinde cautioned.
He further noted that the Commission will closely monitor campaign activities to ensure compliance with electoral laws, especially regarding public gatherings and the use of campaign materials.
Candidates’ Pledges and Commitments
Among the candidates, Mr. Joel Funa, who was nominated to contest for Bunyole West Constituency, pledged to focus on improving agriculture, which he described as the backbone of Butaleja’s economy.
“I am committed to transforming agriculture through modern farming techniques. I have already supported several farmers with inputs such as hoes, seeds, fertilisers, poultry, and livestock. I intend to expand this initiative to cover the entire constituency,” Funa stated.
He also promised to promote unity and inclusiveness among the people of Butaleja West, adding that development can only be achieved through collective effort and peace.
A Peaceful and Competitive Race Ahead
The nomination exercise marks the official beginning of the campaign season(25 November 2025) in Butaleja District, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive but peaceful race. With candidates from major political parties including the NRM, NUP, and FDC, alongside a strong lineup of independent candidates, voters in Butaleja will have a wide range of choices come January 15, 2026.
The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process, calling on all stakeholders—including candidates, supporters, and security agencies—to uphold democratic values throughout the campaign and voting periods.
