South Sudan's Defence Minister Warns Soldiers Against Misuse of Donated Food Supplies

In a decisive move to uphold integrity within the South Sudan People's Defense Force (SSPDF), Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Gen. Chol Thon Balok has issued a stern warning to military personnel regarding the unauthorized sale of food supplies donated by President Salva Kiir. Addressing troops at the Army Headquarters in Bilpam recently, Gen. Balok emphasized that any officer or non-commissioned officer found selling these provisions in the market would face strict accountability measures.

The warning precedes the anticipated arrival of 200 trucks loaded with essential food supplies from Uganda, a generous contribution from President Kiir's office aimed at bolstering the army's sustenance. To date, 40 trucks have successfully arrived, with an additional 30 expected in the coming days. Gen. Balok underscored the importance of these supplies reaching their intended recipients, stating, "We do not want to see an officer or a non-commissioned officer selling these food supplies in the market. If you are caught selling these supplies, you will be held accountable."

Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Dr. Paul Nang Majok, provided further insights into the logistics, confirming that the initial 40 trucks contain a variety of essential items. He noted that an additional 30 trucks are en route through Nimule, bringing the imminent total to 70, with plans for continued monthly shipments to sustain the army's needs. Additionally, in the Northern Upper Nile region, the army has received 10,000 bags of sorghum, each weighing 90 kilograms, to bolster food security for the troops.

This proactive stance by the Defence Ministry highlights a broader commitment to addressing corruption and ensuring that resources allocated for military personnel are utilized appropriately. In a related development, President Salva Kiir has previously threatened to discharge corrupt military commanders who engage in the misappropriation of soldiers' food supplies and salaries, emphasizing the need for integrity and accountability within the armed forces.

The Defence Ministry's recent actions reflect a continued effort to uphold ethical standards and maintain the welfare of the nation's military personnel, ensuring that support provided reaches those it is intended to assist.
