Ssebunya Sanjula Richard Condemns Arrests of Opposition Leaders Ahead of Campaigns

Njeru Municipality parliamentary aspirant on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, Ssebunya Sanjula Richard, has strongly condemned the ongoing arrests of opposition leaders as the country gears up for the 2026 general election campaigns.
Speaking during a community engagement in Njeru on Thursday, Ssebunya described the arrests as a deliberate move to intimidate opposition candidates and suppress political competition.
He said such actions undermine democracy and the freedom of Ugandans to choose leaders of their choice.
“What we are witnessing is not fair play. Arresting opposition leaders ahead of campaigns is a clear sign of fear and an attempt to silence alternative voices. Ugandans deserve free, fair, and peaceful elections where every candidate is given an equal platform to present their ideas,” Ssebunya said.
He urged security agencies to remain professional and neutral, emphasizing that their role should be to protect all citizens regardless of political affiliation. He also called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a level playing field and to safeguard the credibility of the upcoming elections.
Ssebunya further rallied the people of Njeru and Uganda at large to remain vigilant and united, stressing that only through collective action can citizens secure a democratic future.
“We must stand firm and defend our right to choose leaders without intimidation. Uganda belongs to all of us, and no one should be above the law,” he added.
The remarks come amid heightened political tension and accusations from opposition parties that their members are being unfairly targeted through arbitrary arrests, harassment, and restrictions on gatherings.
As campaigns draw closer, Ssebunya promised to champion issues of youth empowerment, improved service delivery, and accountable leadership for the people of Njeru Municipality.
