Bugiri Hosts Museveni as He Starts Busoga Campaign, Promises More Roads and Railway Revival
Addressing thousands of supporters who thronged the rally grounds, the President reflected on Uganda’s political journey since independence, noting that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) brought an end to the divisive sectarian politics that dominated the early 1960s.
Bugiri, Busoga — 15th November 2025: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially begun his campaign trail in the Busoga subregion, starting in Bugiri District, with a strong message centered on unity, peace, infrastructure development, and improved service delivery.
Addressing thousands of supporters who thronged the rally grounds, the President reflected on Uganda’s political journey since independence, noting that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) brought an en
d to the divisive sectarian politics that dominated the early 1960s. He emphasized that valuing every Ugandan—regardless of tribe, religion, or region—laid the foundation for national stability.
“I reminded our people that the NRM united Ugandans and ended the sectarian politics of 1962,” President Museveni said. “From valuing every Ugandan came peace, and that peace brought development.”
Busoga’s Road Network Transformation
The President highlighted the tangible progress Busoga has experienced under the NRM, particularly in road infrastructure, which he described as a backbone for economic growth and regional competitiveness. He cited four major road projects that have reshaped transportation in the area:
Jinja–Kampala Highway, one of the country’s busiest corridors.
Jinja–Iganga–Bugiri–Tororo Road, crucial for regional mobility and trade with Kenya.
Jinja–Kamuli–Mbulamuti Road, connecting communities and boosting commerce.
A fully upgraded Iganga–Kaliro Road, which now facilitates movement of agricultural produce and goods.
“These are four brand-new tarmac roads,” he said, reaffirming government’s ongoing commitment to improving the region’s connectivity.
Upcoming Road Projects to Strengthen Regional Development President Museveni assured voters that the NRM government will continue to expand and modernize road infrastructure in Busoga. Some of the priority projects include:
Further work on the Jinja–Kamuli–Mbulamuti Road
Continued upgrades on the Iganga–Kaliro Road Bugiri–Namayingo Road, a key route expected to stimulate trade and tourism
Improvement of urban and town roads across the region
He noted that these road projects will not only enhance mobility but also reduce production costs for farmers, traders, and manufacturers.
Railway Revival to Reduce Transport Costs
Museveni also informed residents that government is revamping the national railway system as a long-term, cost-efficient transportation solution. The revitalization of rail transport, he said, will significantly reduce the expenses associated with moving large quantities of goods, supporting industries and exporters.
“We are also reviving the railway to cut transport costs,” he emphasized, noting that the revitalized railway will complement the region’s growing road network.
New Water Solution for Bugiri District
Addressing water supply challenges, President Museveni acknowledged that boreholes have proved ineffective in Bugiri due to geological limitations. To ensure long-term access to clean and reliable water, the government will adopt a modern pumping system drawing from Lake Victoria.
“Boreholes cannot work in Bugiri,” he said. “The solution is to pump water from Lake Victoria, like we did in Lira. Bugiri will get the same reliable water.”
This intervention is expected to benefit households, schools, health facilities, and small businesses across the district.
A Campaign Rooted in Peace and Continuity
Museveni’s message in Bugiri set a strategic tone for his wider Busoga campaign, emphasizing peace as the foundation for all development achievements under his government. He urged the people of Busoga to continue supporting the NRM, assuring them that more progress—especially in infrastructure, agriculture, and public services—will follow.
As the President continues his campaign trail across the subregion, Busoga is expected to feature prominently in discussions around transport, industrialization, and social transformation.
