President Museveni: Nyakishara to Host New International Airport as Mbarara’s Growth Accelerates
Reflecting on his early years of struggle, President Museveni reminded the people of Mbarara that the very routes he once traversed carrying weapons are now symbols of peace and stability. He emphasized that the calm enjoyed across Uganda today—from Karamoja to Kisoro, and from Busia to Bundibugyo—did not emerge by chance but from deliberate political choices.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday delivered a message of peace, unity, and transformative development as he addressed thousands of supporters during his campaign rally in Mbarara District. The President, accompanied by senior NRM leaders, used the moment to reflect on Uganda’s remarkable journey from insecurity to stability, and to unveil major infrastructural projects set to elevate Mbarara and the country at large.
He reiterated that the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) ideology of fairness, inclusivity, and national unity has been central to ending the sectarian tendencies that once divided Uganda.
“What used to be corridors of conflict are now pathways of development,” the President noted, stressing that Uganda’s stability continues to attract investors, foster infrastructure growth, and create opportunities for communities.
Nyakishara Selected for a New International Airport
One of the major announcements that thrilled residents was the selection of Nyakishara as the site for a new international airport. President Museveni revealed that both Chinese and Brazilian partners endorsed the location because it shortens global aviation routes, offering Uganda a strategic advantage in international travel and cargo movement.
The proposed airport, he said, will be similar in scale to Entebbe International Airport and is expected to unlock massive economic benefits for Western Uganda. It will boost tourism, enhance regional trade, attract new investments, and strengthen Uganda’s role as a transport hub in East and Central Africa.
“This development will position Mbarara as a key international gateway. The world will connect through here,” the President said.
President Museveni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the district’s transport network. He announced upgrades to the Bwizibwera–Nsika–Nyakashaka–Nyakabirizi road, a crucial route for business and community movement. Additionally, the Biharwe–Rwantyisnga–Kaguhanzya–Bwentama–Bwizibwera road will be enhanced to improve accessibility in rapidly growing peri-urban areas.
These improvements, he said, are essential in supporting Mbarara’s expanding economy and ensuring that farmers, traders, and transporters benefit from efficient linkages to markets within and beyond the district.
The President praised Mbarara for its steady and visible transformation over the years. He pointed to the district’s expanding urban infrastructure, thriving businesses, and the growing middle class as clear indicators of what peace and sound policies can deliver.
“Development follows peace. When people are safe and united, they can work, invest, and prosper,” he remarked.
As the 2026 general elections draw closer, President Museveni urged the people of Mbarara to continue supporting the NRM for sustained progress. He emphasized that the prosperity witnessed today must be strengthened through continued stability, strategic investments, and inclusive leadership.
The rally concluded with enthusiastic cheers from residents who welcomed the President’s new development commitments and expressed appreciation for the long-standing peace in the region.
