TMR International Hospital Unveils “Mama Run” to Drive Maternal Health Awareness and Community Wellness
Scheduled for Saturday, 9th May, just ahead of Mother’s Day, the event is positioned as both a symbolic and practical initiative aimed at raising awareness and expanding access to essential maternal healthcare services.
In a bold step toward advancing maternal health and community wellness, TMR International Hospital has unveiled the inaugural “TMR Mama Run,” a large-scale community event dedicated to celebrating mothers while addressing critical postnatal health challenges.
Scheduled for Saturday, 9th May, just ahead of Mother’s Day, the event is positioned as both a symbolic and practical initiative aimed at raising awareness and expanding access to essential maternal healthcare services.
A Movement Beyond Fitness
Speaking during the official launch, Dr. Daniel M. Talemwa, Executive Director of TMR International Hospital, described the Mama Run as a transformative platform designed to spotlight the often-overlooked realities of maternal health.
He emphasized that the initiative goes far beyond physical activity, calling it “a movement to stand with mothers,” and urging broad community participation—from spouses and children to extended family members—in recognition of the vital role women play in society.
The campaign specifically targets key maternal health concerns, including perineal tears, obstetric fistula, postpartum depression, and post-pregnancy body dysmorphia—conditions that continue to affect many women but are frequently under-discussed and under-treated.
Free Medical Services and Postnatal Support
Participants in the Mama Run will benefit from a comprehensive wellness package offered at no cost. This includes essential health screenings such as blood pressure monitoring, Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment, HIV testing, cholesterol checks, and blood grouping.
In addition, attendees will receive complimentary consultation vouchers for specialized care in regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy—an emerging area in modern healthcare aimed at enhancing recovery and long-term wellbeing.
To further incentivize participation, every ticket purchased will also serve as an entry into a raffle draw, with winners eligible for up to a 50% discount on the “Mummy Makeover” package—a set of restorative procedures designed to help women regain physical confidence after childbirth.
Inclusive Routes and Community Experience
According to Robert Kabushenga, one of the event’s principal technical coordinators, the Mama Run has been carefully structured to accommodate participants of all fitness levels.
Four race categories—3km, 5km, 10km, and 21km—will be available, with the run kicking off at 6:00 AM in Naalya, a suburb of Kampala. The routes will stretch along the scenic Northern Bypass, offering a safe and engaging environment for runners and walkers alike.
Beyond the race itself, the event promises a lively post-run experience, including dance workouts, guided fitness sessions led by professional trainers from Marcos Gym & Spa, and a complimentary breakfast designed to energize participants and foster community interaction.
Restoring Confidence After Childbirth
Providing a clinical perspective, Dr. Martin Tungotyo, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, highlighted the importance of postnatal restorative care, particularly in addressing both physical and psychological changes following pregnancy.
He explained that the “Mummy Makeover” is a customized set of procedures that may include tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast surgeries, all aimed at helping mothers regain confidence and improve their quality of life.
“This is about helping mothers feel like themselves again,” he noted, underscoring the link between physical restoration and mental wellbeing.
Digital Innovation Enhancing Access to Care
As part of its broader strategy, TMR International Hospital is leveraging digital health solutions to enhance accessibility and convenience. Participants can purchase tickets and order run kits through the TMR Golden Living App, available on both iOS and Android platforms.
The app also provides additional services such as emergency response support, virtual medical consultations, and doorstep medication delivery—ensuring continuity of care beyond the event.
Tickets are currently available at all TMR branches, including the main hospital in Naalya and the TMR Golden Living Clinic in Bunga.
Advancing Preventive Healthcare
The Mama Run reflects a growing shift toward preventive healthcare and community-driven wellness initiatives in Uganda. By combining fitness, medical outreach, and awareness campaigns, TMR International Hospital aims to reduce the burden of chronic disease while promoting healthier lifestyles.
As the countdown to the event begins, the Mama Run is shaping up to be more than just a race—it is a call to action for communities to prioritize maternal health, support mothers, and build a healthier future for all.
