Hon. Asha Nabulo Raises Sironko Landslide Threat in Parliament, Joins Parliamentary Muslim Caucus to Champion Community Welfare

Sironko District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Asha Nabulo Mafabi, has called for immediate government intervention to avert a potential humanitarian disaster in the district, revealing that more than 1,600 residents living in high-risk areas are yet to be relocated despite the persistent threat of landslides.

Raising the matter on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Hon. Mafabi expressed concern over the vulnerability of communities residing on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, warning that delays in relocation efforts could result in devastating loss of lives and property.

"The people of Sironko continue to live under constant fear due to the looming landslide threat. More than 1,600 residents in high-risk areas remain exposed and have not yet been relocated. Government intervention is urgently needed to protect lives and livelihoods," she said.

Sironko District, located on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Eastern Uganda, has for years been one of the country's most disaster-prone areas, experiencing recurrent landslides, particularly during heavy rainfall seasons. Previous disasters in the district and neighbouring areas have claimed lives, destroyed homes, and displaced thousands of residents.

Hon. Mafabi urged the government, through the Office of the Prime Minister and relevant disaster management agencies, to expedite relocation programmes and provide immediate support to the affected communities before another tragedy strikes.

She emphasized that beyond relocation, there is a need for long-term interventions, including resettlement support, environmental conservation, and the strengthening of early warning systems to mitigate future disasters.

The legislator's appeal comes amid growing concerns over changing weather patterns and increased rainfall in the Mt. Elgon sub-region, which experts say continue to heighten the risk of landslides and mudslides.

Parliamentary Muslim Caucus Meeting

Later in the day, Hon. Mafabi joined fellow legislators during a meeting of the Parliamentary Muslim Caucus, which was attended by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah Marksons Oboth-Oboth, among other leaders.

As the Amilat, or Leader of Muslim Women in Parliament, Hon. Mafabi reaffirmed her commitment to promoting unity, service and the welfare of communities through collective leadership and engagement.

"I remain committed to promoting unity, service, and the welfare of our communities through collaborative leadership," she said.

The Parliamentary Muslim Caucus brings together Muslim legislators to discuss issues affecting communities across the country and to foster cooperation on matters of national development, social cohesion and service delivery.

Hon. Mafabi's dual engagements—advocating for disaster preparedness in Sironko and championing community welfare through the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus—underscore her continued commitment to addressing both the immediate and long-term challenges facing her constituents and the country at large.

With thousands of residents in Sironko still exposed to the threat of landslides, attention now turns to the government's response and the measures that will be taken to safeguard vulnerable communities before the onset of heavy rains.
