Cultural Leaders Thank Government for UGX 180M Boost, Seek Inclusion in Electoral Peacebuilding

In a significant gesture of appreciation and solidarity, a joint memorandum was presented to the Government of Uganda by traditional and cultural leaders from across the country during the official handover of vehicles at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The event, presided over by Vice President H.E. Jessica Alupo on behalf of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, marked a milestone in the partnership between Government and Uganda’s cultural institutions.

These vehicles are expected to enhance their mobility and facilitate effective leadership and mobilization within their respective jurisdictions.
Key Highlights from the Memorandum
Appreciation for Government Support:
The cultural leaders hailed President Museveni’s continued recognition of their role in national development. They lauded the provision of vehicles, an enhanced honorarium, and the quarterly operational support package which has been increased from UGX 150 million to UGX 180 million starting with Quarter 1 of Financial Year 2025/26.
Strengthening of Cultural Institutions:
The leaders acknowledged the government's role in integrating cultural institutions into Uganda’s broader development agenda. They underscored their commitment to mobilizing communities to uphold cultural values while actively supporting socio-economic transformation.
Call for Formalization of Council of Kings and Cultural Leaders:
In the spirit of fostering coordination and collaboration, the leaders requested formal government support and facilitation of a Council of Kings, Traditional or Cultural Leaders. This, they noted, would improve communication and harmonization of efforts between cultural institutions, government, and stakeholders.
Appeal for Infrastructure Development and Return of Cultural Properties:
The memorandum called for the expedited construction of palaces, cultural centers, and museums across all gazetted cultural institutions. The leaders also appealed for the return of cultural properties of spiritual and historical value that are still under the administration of local governments.
Nonpartisan Role in Upcoming General Elections:
With the 2025/26 general elections on the horizon, the leaders pledged to maintain a nonpartisan stance. They committed to supporting peaceful civic education, voter sensitization, and post-election reconciliation efforts. They called on Government to facilitate their institutions to effectively undertake these national duties.
Commendation for Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development:
Hon. Betty Amongi Ongom and her team at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development received special recognition for their tireless efforts in protecting Uganda’s cultural heritage and providing a solid bridge between the Government and traditional institutions.
Call for Peaceful Participation in Elections:
As Uganda enters a politically sensitive season, the leaders urged citizens to remain calm, respect divergent views, and participate actively and peacefully in the elections as part of their civic responsibility.
