TEREGO DISTRICT — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential flagbearer, on Thursday commissioned the newly constructed Leju Sports Stadium in Terego District, marking a major milestone in the government’s ongoing drive to expand social and sports infrastructure across the country.

The event, which drew thousands of jubilant residents and party supporters, was followed by a campaign rally where President Museveni addressed the gathering, emphasizing the transition from infrastructure development to wealth creation as Uganda’s next frontier for transformation.

“Today, I will speak about only three of the seven key points,” the President said. “The first is peace — something the NRM has delivered for the first time in over 500 years of this country’s history.”

Museveni traced Uganda’s historical timeline, reminding the people that peace had been elusive for centuries, save for the period between 900 and 1400 A.D. under the Bachwezi dynasty. He recounted how tribal wars and colonial rule later plunged the nation into instability, which only ended with the NRM’s rise to power.

“When NRM took power, peace was not immediate. We had to fight off ADF, the LRA, and other groups. But since 2007, Uganda has enjoyed sustainable national peace,” he said.

The President emphasized that lasting peace has enabled Uganda to build strong and inclusive political institutions and set the foundation for prosperity. He encouraged residents of Terego to leverage the available infrastructure and security to create wealth for their households through government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC).

Commitment to Social Services and Infrastructure

President Museveni outlined the strides made in social service delivery within Terego, noting both progress and remaining gaps in education, health, and electricity access.

“Terego has 73 primary schools and 8 secondary schools across 42 parishes, but some still lack primary schools,” he stated. “We will correct this, ensuring every parish without a primary school gets one, and each sub-county without a secondary school also receives one.”

He further noted that of the district’s seven sub-counties, one has a Health Centre IV and five have Health Centre IIIs, leaving two without any health facility. Museveni pledged that the government would ensure every sub-county receives adequate health coverage, including the establishment of a district hospital.

On electricity, the President humorously remarked on the district’s visible progress, saying:

“These days, when I come to West Nile, my helicopter must land carefully, otherwise it might hit the power lines — unlike before when I could land anywhere without issues. This shows development.”

He urged locals to take advantage of such developments to improve their livelihoods, reaffirming the NRM’s commitment to a modern, educated, and prosperous Uganda.

Local Leaders Applaud the President

Hon. Obiga Kania, the State Minister for Internal Affairs and NRM Chairperson for Terego District, expressed gratitude for the President’s continued support and investment in the district’s infrastructure.

“Your Excellency, Terego is one of the fastest-growing districts in terms of infrastructure. We appreciate your leadership in putting money directly into the hands of our people,” Kania said.

However, Kania also highlighted several pressing issues for government consideration after the 2026 elections, noting that Terego still lagged behind in some key areas compared to other regions.

Babanga Wilfred Erima, the NRM flagbearer for Terego East, praised President Museveni as a “promise keeper” who delivers on his commitments. He called for the establishment of a skilling hub in Terego to empower the youth and reduce migration in search of jobs.

“Our youth continue to leave in search of opportunities. We need a skilling hub right here in Terego to equip our young people and keep families together,” Erima said.

He also requested that the government fast-tracks delayed road projects, particularly the Manibe–Yumbe and Manibe–Rhino Camp roads, which were previously highlighted in NRM manifestos.

Similarly, Eric Sabiti Dramviko, the NRM flagbearer for Terego West, thanked the President for granting district status to Terego, the last district created during Museveni’s tenure.

“This district covers 1,176 square kilometers but has only one town council and seven sub-counties. That size creates administrative strain and limits service access under programs like PDM,” Sabiti explained.

He urged the President to consider approving new town councils once the moratorium on new administrative units is lifted.

A Call for Continuity and Prosperity

In his closing remarks, President Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to steering Uganda toward a modern, wealth-driven society anchored in peace, education, and infrastructure. He urged the people of Terego and the wider West Nile region to continue supporting the NRM to consolidate progress made over the years.

“Uganda aims to be modern — free from poverty and backwardness, with education accessible to all,” he declared. “I urge the people of Terego to support the NRM to realise a modern, prosperous Uganda.”

The commissioning of Leju Stadium, a multipurpose facility designed to host district and regional sports events, symbolizes the government’s broader vision of integrating social development with economic empowerment, ensuring that every part of Uganda shares in the fruits of national progress.
