President Museveni Launches Rwenzori Sub-Region Campaign with Rally in Kasese
Addressing thousands of enthusiastic supporters, President Museveni said he was pleased to find sustained peace and renewed development in Kasese—an area that had experienced instability in earlier years. He noted that stability remains a cornerstone of growth in tourism, agriculture, and other sectors critical to the local economy.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday, 4th December 2025, began his campaign trail in the Rwenzori Sub-region with a rally in Kasese District, emphasizing peace, infrastructure development, and the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) long-term strategy for national transformation. Accompanied by senior NRM leaders, the President reaffirmed the party’s commitment to accelerating socio-economic progress in the region and consolidating the gains made over the past four decades.
The President outlined key infrastructural projects that his government has prioritized in the Rwenzori corridor. He revealed that the restoration of the historic Malaba railway line is currently underway, adding that a new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will be constructed to boost regional connectivity and lower transport costs for traders. Museveni further announced plans for a new international airport in the region, pointing out that the facility will enhance tourism and position Rwenzori as a gateway for global visitors seeking to experience Uganda’s mountain ranges, wildlife, and cultural heritage.
“We are committed to transforming Rwenzori. The airport and the Standard Gauge Railway will open up new opportunities for trade, travel, and investment,” he said.
As part of his message, the President reiterated the seven core contributions that the NRM has made to Uganda over the last 40 years. These pillars—security, democracy, infrastructure, education, healthcare, wealth creation, and national unity—remain central to the party’s development agenda.
Museveni cautioned leaders against attempting to address all challenges simultaneously, stressing that strategic prioritisation has been essential to Uganda’s progress. He cited examples such as the successful construction of major road networks in Kasese and other regions, which were achieved through phased planning and careful allocation of resources.
“Kazinda people need more road machinery, and we shall add it. But we must plan well and prioritize carefully so that we continue building steadily,” he noted. The President also highlighted significant improvements in electricity distribution, stating that every district—except Buvuma Island—now has grid power, and the government remains committed to extending electricity to every sub-county.
Residents of Kasese cheered as Museveni commended their resilience and assured them of continuous government support. He called on the people to rally behind the NRM in the 2026 elections to ensure continuity of development and the realization of long-term national projects already in progress.
Leaders from the district praised the President for investing in peace and infrastructure, which they said have contributed to improved livelihoods, tourism growth, and increased business activities.
The Kasese rally marks the beginning of President Museveni’s campaign in the Rwenzori Sub-region, with additional engagements scheduled in surrounding districts as the NRM seeks to consolidate support ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
